At the urging of
the Petrograd Bolsheviks, the Kronstadt Soviet places itself under the Provisional
Government. But it reversed the decision the next day. The sailors had put some
80 officers of the fleet under arrest.
Two days later
(June 8 – May 27), the Petrograd Soviet put the sailors on trial in absentia. Trotsky served, unsuccessfully as the sequel shows, as
their defense counsel.
